Description
Origin
The Olea europaea, better known as the olive tree, originates from the eastern Mediterranean region, particularly in countries such as Iran, Turkey, and Syria. The olive tree has a long history of over 6000 years and is often associated in literature with symbols of peace, wisdom, and hope. Over the centuries, it has spread to other Mediterranean countries and around the world.
Characteristics
The olive tree is a perennial woody plant that can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters. It has a gnarled and twisted appearance with silvery-gray leaves and small fragrant white flowers. The fruits, commonly known as olives, are oval or round in shape and change color from green to purple as they ripen. It is known both for its aesthetic value as an ornamental plant and for its fruits and the olive oil that is extracted from them.
Care
The olive tree is a hardy plant that survives in a wide range of weather conditions but prefers a sunny and slightly humid environment with well-drained soil. Watering should be moderate, and it is important to allow periods of dryness between waterings. Pruning may be necessary to maintain the desired shape and increase fruit production. The tree is quite tolerant of various soil pH values but thrives best in slightly alkaline to neutral soils.
