Description

Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the olive tree, is a plant species native to the Mediterranean basin. This tree has accompanied human civilizations for thousands of years and plays a role in various mythologies. Images of the tree have been found on ancient artifacts from the Minoan civilization in Crete. It also grows in certain regions of Asia and Africa.

Characteristics

The Olea europaea is an evergreen, long-lived tree renowned for its resistance to drought, diseases, and insects. This species can reach a height of 10 to 20 meters, but there are also dwarf varieties suited for smaller spaces. The leaves are silver, lanceolate, and leathery. The main feature is the fruit of the tree, the olive, which is green when young and turns black as it ripens.

Maintenance

The Olea europaea requires well-drained, rocky or sandy soil, and a sunny location. Although the tree is drought-resistant, regular watering during dry periods will help achieve healthier growth and fruiting. Pruning is recommended to maintain the tree’s shape and health. When feeding in spring and autumn, a specific olive tree fertilizer can be used to stimulate optimal growth and fruiting. Although this species is cold-resistant, experts recommend protecting the tree during extremely cold temperatures.
