Description
Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the olive tree, originates from the eastern Mediterranean region. This tree is emblematic for both the Mediterranean region and the cultures and civilizations that were born there. The olive tree is one of the oldest cultivated trees in the world and has been a source of food and oil for over 6000 years.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is an evergreen, long-lived tree that can reach 10 to 12 meters in height under ideal growing conditions. The tree is easily recognizable by its gnarled and twisted trunk and its lance-shaped gray-green leaves. The olive tree produces small white flowers, followed by the known edible olives. The fruits are initially green and turn dark purple-black over time.
Care
Olea europaea trees prefer a sunny and sheltered location with well-draining soil. Although they can withstand some drought, they perform better with regular and moderate watering. The olive tree is quite resistant to most pests and diseases. An annual application of a balanced fertilizer can help maintain healthy growth and fruit production. Pruning can occur in spring to shape and to remove dead or diseased branches.
