Description
Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the olive tree, originates from the eastern Mediterranean region. This tree is emblematic not only for the Mediterranean region but also for the cultures and civilizations that arose there. The olive tree is one of the oldest cultivated trees in the world and has been a source of food and oil for over 6000 years.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is a long-lived evergreen tree that can reach 10 to 12 meters in height under ideal growing conditions. The tree is easily recognizable by its gnarled and twisted trunk and its lance-shaped, gray-green leaves. The olive tree produces small white flowers, followed by the well-known edible olives. The fruits are initially green and darken to a deep purple-black over time.
Care
Olea europaea trees prefer a sunny and sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Although they can withstand some drought, they perform better with regular and moderate watering. The olive tree is quite resistant to most pests and diseases. An annual supply of balanced fertilizer can help maintain healthy growth and fruit production. Pruning can take place in spring to shape the tree and remove any dead or diseased branches.
