Description

Origin
The Olea europaea, more commonly known as the olive tree, has its roots in the eastern Mediterranean region. This tree was one of the first plants cultivated by humans over 7,000 years ago. Besides its historical and cultural value, the plant has had great economic importance for the region, mainly due to olive oil production.

Characteristics

The Olea europaea is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of 10 to 20 meters. It has a characteristic gnarled trunk and small silvery-green leaves. The tree produces small white flowers, followed by the well-known fruit, the olive. Olea europaea is known for its resilience to drought, heat, and wind, making it perfectly suited to the typical Mediterranean climate.

Care

The olive tree requires a sunny and warm location to grow well. It thrives in well-drained, limestone-rich soil. The soil should be dry, as the tree is sensitive to waterlogging. Although drought-resistant, it needs regular watering in the summer. Pruning is generally not necessary unless you want to limit the tree’s size or influence its appearance. In case of severe frost, it is advisable to protect the plant, as the tree is not winter-hardy.
