Description

Origin
The Monstera deliciosa, also known as the Swiss cheese plant, is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. In its natural habitat, it sprouts in the dark undergrowth or on trees where it can climb to gain more light. Its natural environment is a humid setting with moderate temperatures and plenty of shade.

Characteristics

The Monstera deliciosa is a vigorous green houseplant with large shiny leaves that can reach 30 cm wide. Its features include deep incisions in the leaves, giving the plant an exotic appearance. The plant can grow into a large bush or, with the help of a moss stick, into a climbing plant. The Monstera deliciosa can bloom under favorable conditions and then produces an impressive white-greenish flower that can reach up to 20 cm long.

Maintenance

The Monstera deliciosa requires a bright location, away from direct sunlight. The plant is not frost resistant and thrives at temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. The Monstera deliciosa needs moderate watering; overwatering can cause root rot. It is best to let the soil dry a little before watering again. The plant also enjoys high humidity, but it generally does well indoors. The plant can be pruned if necessary to control its size or to stimulate new growth.
