Description

Origin
The Monstera deliciosa, also known as the Swiss cheese plant, is native to the humid tropical forests of Central and South America. In its natural habitat, it emerges in the dark undergrowth or on trees where it can climb to gain more light. Its natural environment is a humid setting with moderate temperatures and a large amount of shade.

Characteristics

The Monstera deliciosa is a vigorous green houseplant with large glossy leaves that can reach 30 cm in width. Its features include the deep incisions in the leaves, giving the plant an exotic appearance. The plant can develop into a large bush or, with the help of a moss pole, into a climbing plant. The Monstera deliciosa can bloom under favorable conditions and then produces an impressive white-green flower that can reach 20 cm in length.

Care

The Monstera deliciosa requires a bright location, away from direct sunlight. The plant is not frost-resistant and thrives at a temperature between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. The Monstera deliciosa has a moderate water requirement; excess watering can cause root rot. It is best to let the soil dry out a bit before watering again. The plant also appreciates a high humidity level but generally does well indoors. The plant can be pruned if necessary to control its size or to stimulate new growth.
