Description

Origin
The Laurus nobilis, also known as bay laurel, is a plant species native to the Mediterranean region. The plant was highly valued in antiquity for its medicinal and culinary properties. During Greek and Roman times, the bay laurel was also used to crown winners of competitions and philosophers.

Characteristics

The Laurus nobilis is an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach a height of 10 to 18 meters. The plant has shiny, dark green leaves that are oval and up to 9 cm long. Laurus nobilis’ flowers are small, cream-colored, and are followed by small black or purple berries. Additionally, the plant is known for its aromatic leaves that are often used in cooking.

Care

For the care of Laurus nobilis, a well-drained soil and a location in full sun or partial shade are most suitable. The plant requires considerable amounts of water and therefore should be watered regularly, especially during drought periods. The bay laurel should be pruned regularly to maintain the desired shape and must be protected from strong winds as the branches are quite fragile. Laurus nobilis is quite cold resistant but needs protection in very low temperatures.
