Description

Origin
The Laurus nobilis, also known as bay laurel, is a species of plant native to the Mediterranean region. The plant was highly valued in antiquity for its medicinal and culinary properties. During Greek and Roman times, laurel was also used to crown the victors of competitions and philosophers.

Characteristics

Laurus nobilis is an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach a height of 10 to 18 meters. The plant has glossy, dark green leaves that are oval and up to 9 cm long. The flowers of Laurus nobilis are small and cream-colored, followed by small black or purple berries. Additionally, the plant is known for its aromatic leaves, which are often used in cooking.

Care

For the care of Laurus nobilis, well-drained soil and a location in full sun or partial shade are most suitable. The plant requires considerable amounts of water and should therefore be watered regularly, especially during drought periods. Bay laurel must be pruned regularly to maintain the desired shape and should be protected from strong winds as the branches are quite fragile. Laurus nobilis is fairly cold-resistant, but the plant needs protection in very low temperatures.
