Description

Origin
Laurus nobilis, also known as bay laurel, is a plant species native to the Mediterranean region. The plant was already highly valued in antiquity for its medicinal and culinary properties. During the Greek and Roman eras, the bay laurel was also used to crown the winners of competitions and philosophers.

Characteristics

Laurus nobilis is an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach a height of 10 to 18 meters. The plant has glossy, dark green leaves that are oval and up to 9 cm long. The flowers of Laurus nobilis are small, cream-colored, and are followed by small black or purple berries. Additionally, the plant is known for its aromatic leaves, which are often used in cooking.

Care

For the care of Laurus nobilis, well-drained soil and a location in full sun or partial shade are most suitable. The plant requires substantial amounts of water and should therefore be watered regularly, especially during drought periods. The bay laurel should be pruned regularly to maintain the desired shape and must be protected from strong winds as the branches are quite fragile. Laurus nobilis is quite cold-resistant, but the plant needs protection in the case of very low temperatures.
