Description
Origin
The Latania lontaroides, also known as the Blue Latan Palm, originates from the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, an isolated group of islands east of Madagascar. This exotic plant currently exists only on the island of Réunion.
Features
The Blue Latan Palm is easily recognizable by its blue-grey to silver leaves, which form a distinct fan pattern. When mature, the palms can reach a height of 10 meters. The trunk of this species is thick and sturdy, with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. Moreover, the plant is identifiable by its fruit; they are small, round, and change color from red to black when mature.
Care
In terms of care, the Latania lontaroides should be planted in well-drained soil and prefers full sunlight, although it also tolerates partial shade. During the growth phase, the plant needs a lot of water, but this decreases once it is mature. It is also important that the temperature range is between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius for optimal growth. While the plant is resistant to light frost, it is sensitive to drought and high salt content in the soil.
