Description
Origin
Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, also known as Spindle Palm or Mascarena verschaffeltii, is a rare species of palm family originating from Rodrigues, one of the Mascarene Islands located in the Indian Ocean. However, today, this unique palm is mainly cultivated in botanical gardens and parks around the world due to its critically endangered status in the wild.
Characteristics
Hyophorbe verschaffeltii is a small, slow-growing palm characterized by its remarkably slender trunk, which is thicker in the middle and tapers towards the top and bottom. This palm has gray to light brown bark and bears long pinnate leaves of bright green. The palm produces small yellow flowers and red egg-shaped fruits. In the wild, the Spindle Palm can reach a height of 6 meters, but in cultivation, it is generally limited to about 3 meters.
Care
Like other palms, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii prefers well-draining soil and a warm, sunny growing climate. Adequate watering is important, but the palm generally does not tolerate waterlogging very well. Protect the palm from low temperatures, especially in winter, and ensure that the soil is well-fertilized for optimal growth. Although this palm species is relatively drought-resistant, regular watering will result in a more beautiful and healthier palm.
