Description
Origin
The Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, better known as the Spindle Palm, originates from the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. Although it is now found worldwide in warm climates and greenhouses, it is nearly extinct in its native habitat. This threat is due to habitat loss and competition from invasive species.
Characteristics
The Hyophorbe verschaffeltii is a small to medium palm that can reach up to 6 meters in height. The features of this plant are its thin, gray trunk that swells at the base and then becomes narrower, as well as its bright green, pinnate leaves that grow in a crown above the trunk. It also produces small yellowish flowers followed by oval, red-orange fruits.
Care
Care for the Hyophorbe verschaffeltii requires a sunny location and well-drained soil. As a tropical species, it does not tolerate frost and therefore must be kept indoors or transferred during the winter months in cooler climates. The plant has a moderate to high need for water but can survive for a while without it if necessary. It is also important to regularly fertilize the palm for optimal growth.
