Description
Origin
The Fouquieria splendens, also known as the Ocotillo, is a plant species native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This species is a fundamental component of its habitat and is recognized for its ability to adapt to the extreme weather conditions of this region.
Characteristics
Fouquieria splendens is a unique plant characterized by its long, thin, and spiny branches that grow from a central base. These branches can reach heights of up to 10 meters. The plant blooms mainly in the spring and early summer, producing an array of small, bright red flowers. Despite its thorny appearance, the plant attracts various insects and birds, particularly hummingbirds.
Care
Caring for Fouquieria splendens requires well-drained soil and full sunlight. As the plant is adapted to desert conditions, it needs little water, especially during drought periods. Overwatering can lead to root rot and ultimately the plant’s death. It is also important to know that the plant sheds its leaves during dormancy periods, but it quickly regains them when sufficient water is available.
