Description

Origin
The Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, also known as the Chinese banyan, is originally a tropical tree from Southeast Asia, but it is also common in warmer regions of the United States, such as Hawaii, Florida, and Southern California. This tree is often found in the wild in forests, on the edge of bodies of water, or in humid mountainous areas, and it is also widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens.

Characteristics

The characteristics of the Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’ are its large crown of dense leaves and its smooth, light bark. The leaves are dark green, shiny, and oval, and can reach up to 5 centimeters in length. The tree is fast-growing and can eventually reach a height of 15 to 20 meters. Perhaps the most unique feature of this tree is its aerial roots that grow from the branches towards the ground and take root there, giving the tree a tall and bushy appearance.

Care

For the care of the Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, it is important to place the plant in a well-lit location, but protected from direct sunlight. The soil should be kept consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. The plant requires high humidity, so it is advisable to mist it daily in drier climates. Under ideal conditions and with proper care, the plant can remain green throughout the year. Consider pruning regularly to control the growth of the tree.
