Description

Origin
The Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, also known as the Chinese banyan, is originally a tropical tree from Southeast Asia, but it is also common in warmer regions of the United States, such as Hawaii, Florida, and Southern California. This tree is often found wild in forests, along bodies of water, or in wet mountainous areas, and it is also widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens.

Characteristics

The characteristics of the Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’ are its large crown of dense leaves and its smooth, light bark. The leaves are dark green, shiny, and oval, and can reach up to 5 centimeters in length. The tree is fast-growing and can eventually reach a height of 15 to 20 meters. Possibly the most unique feature of this tree is its aerial roots that grow from the branches to the ground and take root there, giving the tree a tall and bushy appearance.

Care

For the care of the Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, it is important to place the plant in a well-lit location, but sheltered from direct sunlight. The soil should be kept constantly moist, but avoid water saturation to prevent root rot. The plant needs high humidity, so it is advisable to mist it daily in drier climates. With ideal conditions and proper care, the plant can remain green all year round. Consider pruning regularly to control the tree’s growth.
