Description

Origin
The Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, also known as the Chinese banyan, is originally a tropical tree from Southeast Asia, but it is also common in warmer regions of the United States, such as Hawaii, Florida, and Southern California. This tree is often found in the wild in forests, along bodies of water or in moist mountainous areas, and it is also widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens.

Characteristics

The characteristics of the Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’ are its large crown of dense leaves and its smooth, light bark. The leaves are dark green, glossy, and oval, and can grow up to 5 centimeters in length. The tree is fast-growing and can eventually reach a height of 15 to 20 meters. The most unique feature of this tree is perhaps its aerial roots that grow from the branches towards the ground and take root there, giving the tree a tall and bushy appearance.

Care

For caring for the Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, it is important to place the plant in a well-lit area, but sheltered from direct sunlight. The soil should be kept constantly moist, but avoid water saturation to prevent root rot. The plant needs high humidity, so it is recommended to mist it daily in drier climates. Under ideal conditions and with proper care, the plant can remain green all year round. Be sure to trim regularly to control the tree’s growth.
