Description

Origin
The Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, also known as the Chinese banyan, is originally a tropical tree from Southeast Asia, but it is also common in warmer regions of the United States, such as Hawaii, Florida, and Southern California. This tree is often found in the wild in forests, on the edges of water bodies, or in humid mountainous areas, and it is also widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in parks and gardens.

Characteristics

The characteristics of Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’ include its large crown of dense leaves and its smooth, light-colored bark. The leaves are dark green, shiny, and oval-shaped, and can grow up to 5 centimeters in length. The tree grows rapidly and can eventually reach a height of 15 to 20 meters. Perhaps the most unique feature of this tree is its aerial roots that grow from the branches down to the ground, taking root there and giving the tree a large, bushy appearance.

Care

For the care of Ficus microcarpa ‘Nitida’, it is important to place the plant in a well-lit location, but sheltered from direct sunlight. The soil should be kept constantly moist, but avoid water saturation to prevent root rot. The plant requires high humidity, so it is advisable to mist it daily in drier climates. Under ideal conditions and with proper care, the plant can remain green all year round. Consider regular pruning to control the growth of the tree.
