Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’, better known as the rubber tree or rubber plant, originates from Southeast Asia. This plant thrives wild in the rainforest regions of India, Indonesia, Malaysia, among others. With colonization, this plant made its way to other parts of the world.
Characteristics
Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is a popular indoor plant due to its distinctive features. The plant has large, shiny leaves that are dark green. Additionally, in good conditions, the plant can reach a height of 30 meters, but indoors, it typically remains limited to a height of 2 to 3 meters. The trunk of Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ is thick and woody.
Care
Caring for Ficus elastica ‘Robusta’ requires some attention. The plant enjoys plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. Furthermore, the plant prefers a constant temperature and high humidity, typical of its natural, tropical habitat. Keep the soil well-moistened but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. Lastly, it is recommended to regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to maintain the plant’s gloss and health.
