Origin
The Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. This plant species originally comes from India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Here, the plant grows wild in humid rainforests. The Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ is now cultivated worldwide as a houseplant.
Characteristics
The Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ has large, shiny leaves that are a rich color, from deep red to nearly black. This color gives the plant a unique and striking appearance. This type of plant can, under the right conditions, reach a height of two to three meters. The Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ grows as a robust and vigorous plant, capable of fast growth.
Maintenance
The Ficus elastica ‘Abidjan’ requires plenty of indirect sunlight to grow well. It’s important to keep the soil moist, but too much water can cause root rot. As it is a tropical plant, it’s recommended to maintain high air humidity, for example by misting regularly. During the winter months, it’s advisable to reduce watering.
