Origin
The Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’, better known as ‘Alii’, originates from Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. In these regions, the plant grows in tropical rainforests and on the humid slopes of mountains. Narrow, long leaves, as well as an elegant growth manner, characterize this particular species of Ficus, which found its way to the Western world at the beginning of the 20th century.
Characteristics
The Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’ is characterized by its long, narrow dark green leaves that gently hang down. The plant can reach up to 3 meters in height, making it an excellent choice for large spaces. It has a solid brown trunk that forms an attractive accent for the dark foliage. This ficus is a popular indoor plant due to its tolerance of various light conditions.
Care
The Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’ requires a fairly large amount of light but doesn’t tolerate direct sunlight well. Indirect light is best for the growth and health maintenance of the plant. The plant requires a moderate amount of water; it is good to let the soil slightly dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. The Ficus ‘Amstel King’ is also sensitive to temperatures and prefers a constant temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
