Origin
The Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’, better known as ‘Alii’, originates from Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. In these regions, the plant grows in humid rainforests and on the damp slopes of mountains. Narrow and long leaves as well as an elegant way of growing characterize this particular species of Ficus, which found its way to the Western world at the beginning of the 20th century.
Characteristics
The Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’ is characterized by its long, narrow, dark green leaves that gently hang. The plant can reach up to 3 meters tall, making it an excellent choice for large spaces. It has a solid, brown-colored trunk that forms an attractive accent for the dark foliage. This ficus is a popular indoor plant due to its tolerance of various light conditions.
Care
The Ficus binnendijkii ‘Amstel King’ needs a fairly large amount of light but does not fare well in direct sunlight. Indirect light is best for the growth and health of the plant. The plant needs a moderate amount of water; it’s good to let the soil slightly dry between waterings to prevent root rot. The Ficus ‘Amstel King’ is also sensitive to temperatures and prefers a consistent temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
