Description
Origin
The Ferocactus stainesii, also known as the Mexican barrel cactus, originates from Mexico. It is native to the states of Hidalgo and Querétaro. In particular, this cactus is very present in mountainous, dry, and rocky areas.
Characteristics
The Ferocactus stainesii is a colossal cactus of round to slightly cylindrical shape that can reach a height of 1 to 2 meters. The stems are initially spherical but become columnar over time. The intense green skin of this cactus is covered with thick, curved spines that can be red, yellow, or gray. The yellow flowers are found at the top of the plant and typically appear at the end of summer.
Care
Cultivating the Ferocactus stainesii requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. It is a drought-tolerant plant and can survive extreme sun and heat stress. The plant needs a rest period in winter, during which it requires little to no water. It is important not to overwater this cactus, as this can lead to root rot or even plant death.
