Description
Origin
The Ferocactus, also known as the barrel cactus, is native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This habitat is characterized by dryness, high temperatures, and low rainfall, which has led the plant to develop specific adaptations for survival.
Characteristics
The Ferocactus is a fleshy cactus, shaped like a ball or cylinder, with vertical ribs covered in sharp spines. These spines not only serve to protect against predators but also help the cactus create shade, allowing the plant to reduce water loss through evaporation. The flowers produced by the plant are striking and often vividly colored, ranging from yellow, and orange to shades of red.
Care
Caring for a Ferocactus requires specific attention to environmental conditions. The cactus prefers full sun and heat and does well at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Well-drained soil is essential to prevent root rot, so a cactus soil mix or sand is recommended. Watering should be done sparingly, allowing the soil to become completely dry between waterings.
