Description
Origin
The Fargesia jiuzhaigou, commonly known as red bamboo, originates from the Jiuzhaigou region in China’s Sichuan province. The high altitudes and cold winters characterize the plant’s natural habitat and have contributed to the adaptive capacity of this bamboo.
Characteristics
The Fargesia jiuzhaigou is a bamboo species known for its narrow and densely clustered stems that can reach a height of 3 meters. The stems start green and turn red over time, hence the nickname ‘red bamboo’. The plant’s leaves are narrow and pendulous, contributing to the elegant appearance of the Fargesia jiuzhaigou.
Care
The Fargesia jiuzhaigou requires a location in partial shade or full sun and should be planted in well-drained soil. Although the plant is drought-tolerant, regular watering during dry periods will promote healthy growth. Pruning is not necessary but can help maintain the desired form and size. Lastly, the plant is winter-hardy and can remain outside without issue during the winter.
