Description
Origin
The Espostoa lanata, also known as the Old Man Cactus of Peru, originates from the Andes mountain range in Peru and Ecuador. This region is known for its high altitudes and dry climate, which is very suitable for this cactus. The plant was named after Nicolas E. Esposto, a prominent botanist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Characteristics
The most remarkable features of the Espostoa lanata are the white and woolly hairs that cover the entire plant. The cactus itself is cylindrical in shape, with ribs provided with spines. These spines are hidden in the coat, but are sharp and can reach up to 2 cm long. In the wild, the cactus can grow up to 8 meters tall, although it generally remains much smaller indoors.
Maintenance
The care for Espostoa lanata is similar to that of many other desert cacti. This species requires a lot of bright light and a sandy or gravelly soil with good drainage. They need little water and can be damaged if overwatered. If the cactus is regularly exposed to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius in winter, it can hinder its growth or even kill it.
