Description
Origin
The Elaeagnus ebbingei ‘Compacta’ is named after its original Dutch horticulturist, Ebbinge. This plant originates from Asian regions, including Japan and China. This makes the Elaeagnus ebbingei ‘Compacta’ an Asian species in the Elaeagnaceae family.
Characteristics
The Elaeagnus ebbingei ‘Compacta’ is a compact shrub that can reach a height of between 140 and 160 cm. The evergreen leaves are notably silver on the underside, giving this plant its Dutch nickname Zilverbes. In autumn, the plant produces small white flowers that give off a pleasant, sweet fragrance. These unscented flowers are highly appreciated by bees and often bear orange-red berries in the spring.
Maintenance
The Elaeagnus ebbingei ‘Compacta’ thrives in both full sun and partial shade. The plant requires little maintenance and is quite resistant to diseases and pests. Although drought-resistant, it does best in well-drained soil. It’s recommended to prune the shrub in the spring to maintain its compact shape.
