Description

Origin
The Echinocactus grusonii ‘Intermedius’, better known as the Golden Barrel, originates from central Mexico. The plant primarily grows in semi-desert areas with rocky substrates. This species is mainly found on the slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Echinocactus grusonii ‘Intermedius’ is closely related to the standard Echinocactus grusonii.

Characteristics
The Echinocactus grusonii ‘Intermedius’ is a green, spherical cactus with striking golden spines. These spines are one of the characteristic features of the Echinocactus genus. The plant can reach a height of one meter and a diameter of about 60 centimeters. At a very advanced age, a light green ‘crown’ appears at the top of the cactus.

Maintenance
The Echinocactus grusonii ‘Intermedius’ requires little water. Watering takes place from spring to autumn, with no water needed during the winter period. The plant loves sunlight but needs shade if the sun is too strong. During the growing seasons, the cactus needs feeding. In terms of temperature, the cactus can withstand heat well but should be placed indoors during winter to avoid frost.
