Description
Origin
The Echinocactus grusonii, also known as the Golden Barrel Cactus, originates from Central America, particularly Mexico. The species is named after Hermann E. Gruson, a German industrialist and cactus grower. The growth conditions in their natural habitat are harsh, which is reflected in the specific growth and fertility characteristics of the plant.
Characteristics
The Echinocactus grusonii is a slow-growing spherical cactus. It is a late-flowering plant whose white flowers only appear once the plant is mature, usually after about twenty years. The plant can reach one meter in height and 80 centimeters in diameter. The appearance of the plant is remarkable, with many spiny ribs and a thick yellow color.
Care
Caring for the Echinocactus grusonii requires special attention. The cactus needs a lot of sunlight and should thus be placed in a well-lit location. The temperature can reach up to 30 degrees during the day and must remain above 10 degrees at night. It needs little water, and it is essential to avoid constantly wet soil, as this can cause root rot. It is advisable not to water at all during the winter.
