Description

Origin
The Dypsis lutescens, also known as the areca palm, originates from Madagascar. It is a common species in tropical and subtropical climates. Here, the plant grows well both in forest shade and open spaces. Today, the plant can be found worldwide as a houseplant, thanks to its beneficial properties and tolerance to various climate conditions.

Characteristics

The Dypsis lutescens is a medium-sized palm species that can reach about 6 meters in height. The plant’s leaves are pinnate and greenish-yellow in color. The plant has several stems that grow from a central point, giving it a dense and bushy appearance. When the plant is fully developed, it can produce small yellow flowers followed by decorative, inedible fruits that turn from red to black when ripe.

Care

The Dypsis lutescens requires a sunny to semi-shaded location but does not tolerate direct sunlight. The ideal temperature for this plant is between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to water the plant regularly, but make sure excess water can drain to prevent root rot. The areca palm also likes high humidity, so it may be helpful to mist the plant with water from time to time. The plant prefers well-drained soil rich in nutrients.
