Description

Origin
The Dracaena surculosa, also known as Spotted Dracaena or Gold Dust Dracaena, is a tropical plant native to West Africa. This plant has its roots in countries like Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon. The Dracaena genus includes more than 120 species that can be found in many different climates, but the surculosa variety thrives best in the hot and humid tropical climate of its origin.

Characteristics

The Dracaena surculosa is a slender and upright evergreen shrub that can reach a height of 2.5 meters. The plant is recognizable by its dense foliage of shiny, elliptical leaves that are often speckled. The leaves are typically a deep green with yellow spots, which explains the nickname “Gold Dust”. The surculosa rarely blooms, but when it does, its flowers are often white to cream and emit a sweet fragrance.

Care

Since the Dracaena surculosa hails from a tropical climate, this plant requires warm temperatures, high humidity levels, and indirect sunlight. The plant cannot tolerate low temperatures and should be kept at a temperature of at least 13°C year-round. The Dracaena surculosa has moderate water needs and the substrate should dry out between waterings. As the plant comes from a humid climate, it is recommended to regularly mist the leaves to maintain a high humidity level.
