Description

Origin
The Dracaena fragrans ‘Malaika’ is a variant of a type of plant from the Dracaena genus. This genus is primarily found in Africa, South Asia, and Central America. Additionally, this specific variant is also known as the Dragon Tree. The name ‘Malaika’, meaning ‘angel’, comes from Swahili, a language mainly spoken in East Africa.

Characteristics

The Malaika stands out for its attractive, green, and shiny leaves. These can reach up to 60 cm in length, while the entire plant can grow to a maximum height of two meters. The leaves form at the top of the stem and create a graceful appearance, growing outward. The Malaika is also recognized for its air purifying properties.

Care

The Dracaena fragrans ‘Malaika’ is an easy-to-maintain plant. The plant prefers a bright spot to partial shade without direct sunlight and appreciates a consistent temperature, preferably between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius. Generally, the plant has few humidity requirements, but regular watering can certainly help sustain its shiny leaves. It is advisable to water the plant moderately: the soil should dry out first before the plant receives water again, to prevent root rot. Furthermore, the Malaika is known for its slow growth. Therefore, adding fertilizer is only necessary after several years.
