Description

Origin
The Dioscorea elephantipes, also known as the elephant’s foot, originates from the arid southern regions of Africa. This plant is part of the Dioscoreaceae family and is endemic to the provinces of the Cape and some parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Characteristics

The main characteristic of the Dioscorea elephantipes is its large aerial tuber that resembles the shape of an elephant’s foot, hence its name. This tuber can grow up to one meter in height and is covered with hard, horny segments that protect the plant from animals and repeated droughts. The plant has string-like tendrils on which heart-shaped leaves and small greenish flowers grow.

Care

The elephant’s foot is a winter-growing plant and therefore requires care, where in summer, its resting period, watering should be reduced. The plant thrives in well-drained soil and at a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. It is essential to plant the Dioscorea elephantipes in a plant pot with a diameter at least twice larger than the tuber to accommodate the plant during its growing period. Additionally, to remain healthy, this plant needs a very bright place, but without direct sunlight.
