Description

Origin
The Dicksonia antarctica, better known as the Australian tree fern, is a species of fern native to Eastern Australia and Tasmania. The plant primarily grows on moist, sheltered forest floors and in gullies. It naturally occurs in cool-temperature rainforests.

Characteristics

The Dicksonia antarctica is characterized by its thick, fibrous trunk top which is surrounded by a rosette of green, fresh, feather-like leaves. The trunk can reach up to 15 meters high under ideal conditions. At a young age, the plant grows very slowly. Characteristic of Dicksonia antarctica is its ability to form new growing points after being damaged.

Care

Caring for the Dicksonia antarctica mainly requires a lot of water and avoiding drought. The plant needs watering at least once a week in summer, and the soil should remain moist in winter. Choosing the location is also essential; the plant prefers a bright to semi-shaded spot and requires a protected location in winter. Sensitivity to frost means that in colder climates, the Dicksonia antarctica should overwinter indoors or in a heated greenhouse.
