Description

Origin
The Dicksonia antarctica, better known as the Australian tree fern, is a species of fern native to Eastern Australia and Tasmania. The plant primarily grows on moist, sheltered forest soils and in gullies. It is naturally found in temperate and cool rainforests.

Characteristics

The Dicksonia antarctica is characterized by its thick, fibrous stem surrounded by a rosette of fresh, green feather-like leaves. The stem can reach up to 15 meters high under ideal conditions. At a young age, the plant grows very slowly. A characteristic of the Dicksonia antarctica is its ability to form new growth points after being damaged.

Care

Caring for the Dicksonia antarctica mainly requires a lot of water and avoidance of drought. The plant needs water at least once a week in summer, and the soil must remain moist in winter. Choosing the right location is also crucial; the plant prefers a bright to semi-shaded spot and requires protection in winter. Sensitivity to frost means that in colder climates, the Dicksonia antarctica should overwinter indoors or in a heated greenhouse.
