Description
Origin
The Cycas revoluta, also known as the Sago Palm, originates from southern Japan and the Ryukyu Islands. Here, the plant grows in forests, but also on rocky coasts. The plant has adapted to a wide range of climates and is now widespread around the world as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
The Cycas revoluta is a slow-growing, palm-like plant characterized by its hard, leathery, and feathery leaves. The plant can grow up to 3 meters tall. This plant develops large cones and bears either male or female flowers, meaning individual plants are either male or female. Although the leaves are a fresh green, the plant resembles a palm more than a fern due to its woody trunk.
Care
The Cycas revoluta requires little maintenance and is therefore an easy plant to care for. The plant prefers a sunny to semi-shaded location and well-draining soil. In general, this plant needs little water, as too much water can even lead to root rot. For optimal growth, it is important to fertilize the plant annually.
