Description

Origin
The Chamaerops humilis, better known as the European dwarf palm, has its roots in the Mediterranean region. This palm is generally abundant in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and other warm European countries. It is a typical coastal plant, found in dunes and on rocky slopes.

Characteristics

The Chamaerops humilis is a versatile, low and bushy palm and is the only species of palm native to the European continent. This plant has fan-shaped leaves that can range from blue-green to silvery-green. The leaves are provided with sharp thorns. It generally grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 meters, although some specimens can reach up to 4 meters in height. The plant bears small yellow flowers followed by round fruit, orange to brown.

Maintenance

Like all palms, the Chamaerops humilis loves sun and space. However, it requires little maintenance and is frost-resistant, which makes it perfect for outdoor use. It needs well-drained soil to support its water needs and prevent roots from drowning. Although it is a fairly drought-resistant plant, it benefits from regular watering during the growth phase. The plant also has high salt tolerance, making this palm ideal for coastal plantings.
