Description

Origin
The Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’ is a type of palm native to the western part of the Mediterranean region. In particular, this type of palm is very common on the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily. It is the only palm native to Europe.

Characteristics

The Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’, also known as the dwarf palm or European fan palm, is a compact, slow-growing palm that does not exceed 1.5 meters in height. The palm has deeply incised green leaves in a fan shape and can develop single or multiple trunks. This palm is very winter hardy and can survive temperatures as low as -12 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the palm produces inconspicuous yellow flowers which later in the year develop into black fruits.

Care

Caring for the Chamaerops humilis ‘Vulcano’ requires some effort. The palm thrives best in a well-lit place with some morning or evening sun. It is important to water the plant properly, but it should never sit in water, as this can cause root rot. The palm grows best in well-drained soil. In case of strong growth, the palm can be fertilized every two weeks during the growing season with a palm fertilizer.
