Description
Origin
The Chamaerops humilis, better known as the European dwarf palm, has its roots in the Mediterranean region. This palm is commonly abundant in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and other warm European countries. It is a typical coastal plant, found in dunes and on rocky slopes.
Characteristics
The Chamaerops humilis is a versatile, low, and bushy palm and is the only native palm species of the European continent. This plant has fan-shaped leaves that can range from blue-green to silver-green. The leaves are equipped with sharp spines. It generally grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 meters, though some specimens can reach 4 meters in height. The plant bears small yellow flowers followed by round fruits, orange to brown.
Care
Like all palms, the Chamaerops humilis loves sun and space. However, it requires little maintenance and is frost-resistant, making it perfect for outdoor use. It needs well-drained soil to support its water needs and prevent the roots from drowning. Although it is a fairly drought-resistant plant, it benefits from regular watering during the growth phase. The plant also has a high tolerance to salt, which makes this palm ideal for coastal plantings.
