Description
Origin
The Ceropegia woodii, also known as the ‘string of hearts’, originates from South Africa. It belongs to the succulent family, known for their drought resistance. This species thrives mainly in dry, rocky areas as well as forests where scarce rainfall ensures their survival.
Characteristics
The unique characteristic of the Ceropegia woodii is that it produces long shoots with bicolored heart-shaped leaves. The leaves are green on top and purple underneath, making it an attractive houseplant. The plant also produces small tubular flowers that are mostly purple. The Ceropegia woodii can reach several meters in length.
Care
Although the plant is strong and capable of surviving in tough conditions, the Ceropegia woodii requires specific care to thrive. It performs best in a warm environment with plenty of indirect light and should be watered when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. The plant needs little food, on average, only once a month during the growing season. In winter, the plant goes into a resting period and watering should be reduced.
