Description
Origin
The Caryota mitis, also known as the clustered fishtail palm, is a plant species naturally found in the tropical climate of Southeast Asia. This species is native to countries such as India, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Characteristics
The Caryota mitis is a unique palm with its pinnate leaves that stand out for their strange shape. Indeed, the leaves are segmented and each segment is shaped like a fishtail, which is quite unique in the palm world. This palm can reach up to 12 meters tall in ideal conditions and develops many trunks, which grow from the same rhizome, hence its nickname ‘clustered fishtail palm’.
Care
The care of the Caryota mitis requires a warm and humid environment, reflecting its natural habitat. It needs plenty of light, but direct sunlight can damage the leaves. The soil must be watered regularly and should never dry out completely. This makes it a plant that requires intensive care and is therefore best suited for experienced gardeners.
