Description
Origin
The Caryota mitis, also known as the fishtail palm, is native to Southeast Asia. The plant’s natural habitat ranges from India to the Philippines and from Thailand to northern Australia. They prefer to grow in warm, humid forests, where they are often found along riverbanks and in swampy conditions.
Characteristics
The characteristic of the Caryota mitis is its unique leaf shape that resembles a fish’s tail. The plant can reach a height of 12 meters, although indoors it generally does not exceed 6 meters. The growth process is relatively slow, taking time to reach full height. Each plant produces fruits only once in its lifetime, at the end of its life cycle.
Care
Optimal care for the Caryota mitis includes placement in partial shade to full sun and regular watering without saturation. The plant cannot withstand temperatures below 10°C and requires high humidity, thus benefiting from daily misting or a humidifier. The use of ordinary potting soil is sufficient, although adding peat to the soil may promote growth.
