Description
Origin
Carex hachijoensis ‘Evergold’, also known as Japanese Sedge, is an ornamental grass native to East Asia and the Pacific, including the Japanese island of Hachijo-jima. This plant is found in the wild in moist forests and marshes and is named after its golden color, which means ‘Evergold’ in English.
Characteristics
Carex hachijoensis ‘Evergold’ is known for its green and golden leaves that provide color in all seasons. This graceful, evergreen plant reaches a height of 30 to 45 centimeters and a width of approximately 45 centimeters. Its narrow leaves elegantly hang and are particularly remarkable for their variegated green and gold coloration. Additionally, the plant produces small brownish flowers in late spring or early summer.
Care
During the growing season, Carex hachijoensis ‘Evergold’ requires well-drained and moist soil, preferably in a partially shaded or fully shaded location. In summer, they can tolerate drought, but in autumn and winter, they need constant moisture. Although the plant requires relatively little maintenance, it can benefit from light pruning in early spring to remove any dead or damaged leaves and stimulate new growth.
