Description
Origin
The Calathea sanderiana, also known as Maranta sanderiana, originates from the tropical forests of South America, mainly in Brazil. This plant species is part of the Marantaceae family and primarily grows in shady and humid environments.
Characteristics
The Calathea sanderiana is known for its remarkable leaves that grow on long, slender stems. These leaves have a dark green color on top and are purplish-red underneath, where they are covered with a pattern of fine lighter colored lines. A characteristic of this plant species is the rhythm it follows: during the day, it unfolds its leaves and at night, it closes them, a phenomenon known as nyctinasty.
Care
For optimal care, it is important that the Calathea sanderiana is placed in a location where it is not exposed to direct sunlight, but where it receives enough light. This plant prefers high humidity and requires regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist. Feeding can consist of a standard indoor plant fertilizer, which can be administered monthly during the growing season. It is important to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
