Description
Origin
The Calathea rufibarba ‘Wavestar’, also known as the Velvet Calathea, originates from South America, specifically in tropical areas. It is particularly found in the dense forests of Brazil, where it thrives in a warm and shaded environment. This specific species is part of the Marantaceae family, known for their striking leaf patterns and diversity.
Characteristics
The Calathea rufibarba ‘Wavestar’ is distinguished by its unique wavy leaf structure, hence the nickname ‘Wavestar’. This plant features a rich dark green color on the top of the leaves, while the underside is a purple hue. The velvety texture of the leaves gives the plant its alternative name, the Velvet Calathea. The plant can reach a height of about 1 meter and has long, upright stems on which the leaves grow.
Care
Caring for the Calathea rufibarba ‘Wavestar’ requires some attention. It needs a warm environment and indirect sunlight, as direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. In terms of water requirements, the ‘Wavestar’ prefers slightly moist soil, but not too saturated as this can lead to root rot. The plant also benefits from high humidity, similar to what it would experience in its natural and tropical environment. In cold weather, the plant’s water needs decrease significantly.
