Description
Origin
The Calathea orbifolia is a plant species native to South America. It is mainly found in the warm tropical forests of countries such as Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. This particular plant species gets its name from the Greek word ‘kalathos’, meaning ‘basket’.
Characteristics
A remarkable feature of the Calathea orbifolia is its large round leaf with impressive silver stripes, hence the nickname ‘Round Leaf Calathea’. The leaves of the plant grow in a fan shape, allowing the plant to flourish widely. The Calathea orbifolia can reach up to a meter in height. The leaves are known to close at night and open during the day.
Care
Caring for the Calathea orbifolia requires some attention. The plant prefers a location where indirect light falls. An important aspect of care is humidity; the Calathea orbifolia requires a lot of water but should not be submerged in water. The potting soil should remain slightly moist, but excessive water should be avoided. It is recommended to water the plant regularly to promote high humidity.
