The Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’, commonly known as ‘Shady Lady’, is native to the tropical regions of Central and South America. It is particularly indigenous to the Bahamas, Cuba, and Florida. Generally, it acts as a tree in its local ecosystems, where it thrives in coastal areas and swamps.
Characteristics
The ‘Shady Lady’ is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of twenty meters. Its leaves are glossy, dark green in color, and have an oval to lanceolate shape. The tree produces small green, inconspicuous flowers that grow tightly in long clusters. The fruits of the tree are small hard nuts. A remarkable feature is the trunk of this tree, which has a limestone feel and a striking gray-black color.
Care
Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’ is known for its high salt and drought tolerance and is a popular choice for coastal and desert landscapes. Although the tree grows best in full sun, it can tolerate partial shade. ‘Shady Lady’ prefers well-draining soil and requires regular watering but can also withstand longer periods of drought.
