Origin
The Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’ is a type of evergreen tree originally found in the tropical regions of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is located both at sea level and at altitudes up to 1200 meters. The plant is also known as ‘Black Olive’, although it has no relation to the true olive tree.
Features
The Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’ is known for its graceful and elongated branches and its dense, dark green leaves that form the characteristic silhouette. The leaves are about 2 to 4 cm long, slightly glossy and found in clusters. This tree produces inconspicuous greenish flowers in spring, followed by small egg-shaped fruits. Thanks to its density and wide spread, the Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’, as its name already suggests, is an ideal shade tree.
Care
The Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’ is a low-maintenance tree and resistant to many different conditions. It grows well in both full sun and partial shade. The type of soil is not crucial for this tree, but it prefers well-drained soil. The tree is drought-resistant and therefore only needs additional water during long periods of drought. Pruning is useful to maintain the shape of the tree and remove dead branches.
