Description
Origin
The Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’, commonly known as ‘Shady Lady’, originates from the tropical regions of Central and South America. It is particularly native to the Bahamas, Cuba, and Florida. Generally, it acts as a tree in its local ecosystems, where it thrives in coastal zones and swamps.
Characteristics
The ‘Shady Lady’ is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of twenty meters. Its leaves are shiny, dark green, and have an oval to lanceolate shape. The tree produces small, inconspicuous green flowers that grow tightly in long clusters. The tree’s fruits are small hard nuts. A remarkable feature is the trunk of this tree, which has a limestone feel and a striking gray-black color.
Care
Bucida buceras ‘Shady Lady’ is known for its high tolerance to salt and drought and is a popular choice for seaside and desert landscapes. Although the tree grows best in full sun, it can tolerate partial shade. ‘Shady Lady’ prefers well-draining soil and requires regular watering, but can also withstand longer periods of drought. Although the tree is resistant to many diseases and pests, it may be susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered.
