Description
Origin
The Brahea armata, also known as the Mexican Blue Palm, is a species of palm native to northwestern Mexico. This species is particularly found in the Sonoran and Baja California deserts. However, the palm has also adapted and spread to other hot and dry climates, including the southwestern United States.
Characteristics
The Brahea armata is appreciated for its attractive silver and blue leaves that – depending on growing conditions – can reach a length of one to four meters each. The palm’s trunk is simple and gray, with a height that can reach 15 meters, and the inflorescence can also attain an impressive length. The distinctive feature of Brahea armata lies in its flowering of long clusters of flowers that sprout from the crown and hang above the leaves. The fruits from these flowers are small and spherical.
Care
The Brahea armata generally requires low maintenance and is drought-tolerant. The palm prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and warm temperatures. Although this species of palm is cold-resistant, it is important to be cautious of excessive winter precipitation, as this can cause root rot. Despite its drought resistance, regular watering will generally promote better growth.
